Oblates with the Monastery of Our Lady and St. Laurence are Orthodox laity or clergy, men or women, married or single, who are not professed monks or nuns, but are affiliated with a Benedictine monastic community. To become an oblate, one undergoes a year-long study as a novice oblate and, after successful completion, chooses to make oblation to God and the monastery. We follow the Rule of Saint Benedict to the best of our ability in our state of life. The Divine Office (canonical hours) is a focus of Benedictines and oblates strive to pray these throughout the day. We seek to daily read the Bible through the monastic method of Lectio Divina. The roots of this type of scriptural reflection date back to the 3rd century. The practice of Lectio Divina by monastics was first established in the early 6th century by Benedict of Nursia (480-547).
